The “Chinese as an Additional Language” (CAL) Curriculum Project is a collective effort by representatives from ICN schools to fill the curriculum gap experienced by all ICN schools.
Currently, the Australian Curriculum - Chinese provides curricula suitable for second language learners, background learners and first language learners learning in mainstream school contexts. However, all curricula fail to address the developmental needs and progress of learners who are afforded more time-on-task (e.g. CLIL programs) or immersion opportunities (e.g. bilingual schools).
The CAL is:
a collective attempt to capture the expectations and experiences of frontline bilingual practitioners nationwide
a map of developmental progress in stages(甲、乙、丙、丁、戊)for students in a bilingual context
a common currency via which ICN schools can discuss teaching and learning
a reference document for planning, differentiation and reporting
The CAL Project Team consists of Stanley Wang, Fangni Zhou, Constance Chen, Yin Zhang, Grace Wen, Yvonne Lu, Pei Tseng and Erik Ma.
CAL Version 2.2 has been published in April, 2025 and is available for access via the ICN Hub.
